Larkin and Lacey

As it is with the human nature, all of us always want to have a better tomorrow. With this objective, everyone is on the move to change their lives; people try work hard even at their homes so as to get their daily bread while the majority others opt to migrate to better economically stable countries.

The latter has currently led to rapid increase in population to the host country which has, in turn, caused the migrants to be poorly treated.

Back in the 1990s, most of the migrants especially from Mexico ended up being huddled together in border patrol cars, suffered from long and cold nights in the wild while others ended up dead as they tried to seek a better life in the United States. Even though there are still some issues and hardships on immigrations’, the formation of the American Civil Liberties Union popularly known as the ACLU group in 1987 helped save a lot of immigrant’s life.

This group, up to date, is still dedicated to fighting for the fundamental human right of migrants and their civil rights as well. The team also ensures that international migrants’ rights are also considered.

This goes a long way to ensure that those seeking a better life do not end up on the streets or end up being mistreated by the locals. The group provides that the migrants are given an equal opportunity in the community activities and forums. Read more: Michael Larcey | Crunchbase and Jim Larkin | Twitter

The majority of the groups that advocate for human life are non-profit organizations; therefore, they rely on funds and donations from others. Organizations such as the Lacey and Larkin group are the ones who work behind the scenes to ensure that the groups that advocate for the human rights and civil rights of migrants run smoothly.

Two ex-co-workers and journalists’ of the Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media -Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, founded the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.

After their arrest on October 18th, 2009 on account of revealing the proceedings of an ongoing grand jury that sought articles concerning Maricopa County Sherriff Joe Arpaio, the two fought their case all the way to the United States Court of Appeal where they won.

A lump sum of $3.75 million settled the case which Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin decided to put into a fund that would help and support migrant – supportive groups to avoid suffering and deaths encountered in the deserts.

The efforts of Michael and Jim have not gone unnoticed. Since the Larkin and Lacey Frontera fund was founded, more well-wishers have made it possible for the development of new and support of the already existing advocate groups.

This groups help with the social, civic engagement of migrants, provide services and care to them and ensure their rights to quality education, right to life and right to basic housing are met. Examples of other famous groups which rely on the Larking and Lacey Frontera Fund are; the Arizona Dream Act Coalition (ADAC), Arizona Coalition for Migrants Rights (ACMR) and the Border Action Network.

The Larking and Lacey Fund advocates that all human beings, despite their race, gender or nationality, should have equal rights and opportunities in trying to raise their living standards.

The Joe Arpaio drama with the Phoenix New Times creators.

Joe Arpaio has been the head of the Maricopa County sheriff department for over two decades. His infamous way of treating women and inmates especially immigrants with the Tent City had been brought up by the innocent victims severally. He used aggressive ways to excrete order. This lead to a lot of coverage of his law enforcement tactics. Arpaio had been ordered by court many times to stop the brutal ways of law enforcement. This included the order from Judge Murray Snow of Maricopa County to stop detaining people over suspicions of being immigrants since this was not enough reason for detainment. This was against the constitutional law where the detainees didn’t have the apparent reason for the injustice. These events were addressed behind the public eyes for over a decade but changed due to a case involving Arpaio.

Inmates in Tent City were charged by Arpaio with violating the rights of Latinos and other Hispanic groups. Unfortunately, Arpaio continues to defy the orders. He still believed in fighting illegal immigration in every other possible way. He encouraged his followers to unlawfully racial profile Latinos and the minority groups. Many of the residents were tired of this unexpectable behavior. This picked the interested of reporters including Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. They are involved in the Village Voice Media. The two attended the Arizona State University but dropped out to venture in publishing. Their publishing company; Phoenix New Times started uncovering the injustice.

Due to their story, Arpaio arranged their arrest and detention. Their First Amendment rights were violated. The arrest caused a public outrage that led to their release with 21 hours. The Phoenix New Times creators sued the Maricopa County sheriff department which they won and were compensated $3.75 million. Many people taught that Arpaio was going to jail. However, after becoming president, Donald Trump, pardoned him for his hideous activities. With the money, Michael and Jim Frontera Fund to help other organizations that fight for the rights of the Latino communities.
