Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water Meets Resounding Success

Ryan Emmons, the founder of Waiakea Water, saw an opening in the bottled water segment when he noted that none of the current offerings offered all three socially conscious components. He founded his company on the premise of providing a sustainable and healthy water, environmentally friendly packaging, and a campaign to give back to those who are in need.

Ryan Emmons founded the company in 2012 when he was 22 years old and just out of college. The company has grown an amazing 4000% since and has achieved an annual growth rate of 170%. The company went from selling only 2,304 cases of water three and half years ago to 122,400 this year. He started with smaller stores and distributors in the market and built up to having accounts with the likes of Whole Foods. Waiakea Water is now worth $10 million.

According to Specialty Food, the company sources Waiakea springs water from a sustainable source on the Big Island. Both rainwater and snow that falls on Mauna Loa Volcano seep into the ground and end up being filtered through 14,000 feet of volcanic rock. Along the way, the water picks up extremely healthy minerals like potassium, calcium, and magnesium as well as being naturally alkaline and rich in electrolytes.

As part of the company’s socially conscious agenda, 650ml of clean water is donated for every bottle sold. The water is obtained through a partnership Emmons forged with PumpAid. So far over 500 million liters of water have been donated to communities in need in Africa.

The third part of the socially conscious premise of the company is the packaging that the water comes in. The water is bottled in an eco-friendly way. Even though the water has to be shipped to where it is bottled in Long Beach, California, Emmons says that the ships’ emissions are offset by how the packaging is processed.

The bottles are made 100% from recycled bottles, which take 85% less energy to produce. Baby Boomster said that Waiakea Water the company sources is also very sustainable as it takes only 30 days for the water to filter all the way through the volcano.
