Finding success in the music industry, especially international success, is incredibly rare. Most artists struggle in futility, trying to build an audience night after night, if they are ever able to achieve some level of notoriety, it would be understandable to keep up the formula that got them to that point. Alex Pall and his DJ duo the Chainsmokers have achieved that incredibly difficult task, growing from a semi-popular New York City DJ into an international touring sensation. But that does not mean Alex and his colleague Andrew Taggart are going to keep making the same music that brought them their initial fame.
Alex Pall was a part-time DJ in the NYC club scene when a faithful set at an art gallery opening lead to him quitting his full-time job and devoting himself to making a career out of music. Having already established The Chainsmokers as a duo, his original partner decided to leave the group and he was left looking for someone new. Enter Andrew Taggart, a college student from northern New York who was introduced to Alex Pall through Alex’s manager. After a dinner to meet the two went back to Alex’s NYC apartment to try making music together. Andrew never left, and they spent months creating music day and night before breaking out with singles like “Roses” and “Don’t Let Me Down”.
While these hits followed the traditional formula for an electronic music DJ, that is the DJ creating the beat and melody while a guest singer and songwriter provided the lyrics and voice, the duo is looking to break that mold with their latest single, “Closer”. On “Closer” Andrew provides the vocals and the duo together wrote the lyrics.
Alex Pall and The Chainsmokers are going to continue to make great music and challenge the conventional thought that a DJ should be seen behind the turn-tables but not heard. Their fans are certainly looking forward to this new voice from the group.
